Study into residuals of small family hatchbacks
The Volkswagen Gold and Mazda 3 are amongst the best small family hatchbacks for retaining value, new research shows.
Used Car Expert magazine studied the new and three-year values of several small family hatchbacks with 1.6 petrol engines, with some surprising results.
The Peugeot 307 suffered the biggest loss of £7,900 – over 50 per cent of the original value. However, the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3 and Renault Megane fared better, retaining between 60-65 per cent of the original value.
The Honda Civic topped the list, with a loss of just 15.81 per cent of original value, while the Toyota Auris surprisingly retained over 65 per cent of its value despite recent publicity over recalls.
However, the researchers were quick to point out cars with diesel engines would vary from these results, and any residual value is dependent on mileage and condition of the car.
