Mazda MX-5 wins 'Best Roadster' title again
The Mazda MX-5 has won the ‘Best Roadster’ accolade at this year’s Auto Express New Car Awards, making it the sixth consecutive year the convertible has received this honour.
Amongst the other contenders which the Mazda beat included offerings from Audi, BMW, Lotus, Mercedes and Porsche.
Commenting on the MX-5, the Auto Express acting editor, Graham Hope, said: ‘A short blast behind the wheel is all you’ll need to understand why the latest MX-5 is such a smash hit. For smiles-per-mile at an affordable price, nothing else comes close’.
‘Lively performance and beautifully balanced, confidence-inspiring handling combine with ageless looks and a simple, well built cabin, all the things which buyers demand in a roadster’.
First launched back in 1989, the current generation Mazda MX-5 is available for a limited period with a range of ‘customer savings’, meaning pricing for the soft-top starts from £16,990.
Last month, a ‘Black limited edition’ version of the Mazda MX-5 was unveiled, with 500 units going on sale in the UK.
Inspired by the MX-5 GT race car, the Sport Black edition sports unique exterior styling features such as unique paint finishes, a ‘Brilliant Black’ powered retractable hard-top and dark ‘gun metal’ 17" alloy wheels.
It carries the same 2.0 litre petrol unit, six-speed transmission set up found on the Sport Tech version of the MX-5. With this the roadster delivers 160hp which means acceleration from 0-62mph is achieved in 7.9 seconds, and the top speed is 139mph.
The ‘Black’ MX-5 also brings a combined fuel economy of 36.2mpg and a CO2 emission rating of just 181g/km.
Each model will be sold with an on-the-road price of £22,995.
