Mazda clears 900,000 MX-5 units
The UK’s favourite roadster – the Mazda MX-5 – will pass a significant sales milestone today when it reaches the 900,000 unit milestone.
According to the Japanese manufacturer the success is unsurprising as the Mazda MX-5 deals in ‘affordability and unadulterated fun’.
With a career spanning more than 21 years, the MX-5 has become something on an icon in Britain with more than 100,000 sales and a host of world records.
At the last count the roadster had claimed more than 178 awards and according to Mazda UK’s Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson its success looks set to continue both in the UK and across the globe.
“For British motorists, the Mazda MX-5 is the ultimate expression of our Zoom-Zoom philosophy of creating cars that are fun to drive," said Thomson.
“Over 20 years, the MX-5 has maintained its position as an affordable, lightweight sportscar that is responsive and rewarding to drive, while also proving itself to be ‘recession proof’. We sold 10 percent more MX-5s last year than we did in 2009 and owners enjoy remarkably high residual values."
At present there are ten versions of the two-seat model with the latest being a special edition MX-5 Miyako – a car with unique leather upholstery and the first in the MX-5 range to be available in both roadster coupe and soft-top bodystyles.
Pricing for the stylish and successful model starts at £17,975 and peaks at £23,205.
Mazda has never been shy of releasing anniversary or commemorative versions of the roadster so don’t be surprised if a number of limited edition models hit the UK soon.
