Happy Birthday to the Vauxhall Astra
The British built Vauxhall Astra celebrates 30 years of success.
The Vauxhall Astra is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, making it one of Britain’s longest selling cars.
Currently onto its sixth generation, the Astra has sold nearly three million cars in the UK, establishing itself as one of the UK’s best loved cars of all time.
The Astra is certainly popular with UK drivers, as recent figures from the DVLA indicate one in every twenty cars on the road in the UK today is a Vauxhall Astra.
The latest version of the Astra, released in late 2009, is produced in the Ellesmere Port manufacturing plant.
Due to the success of the Astra, Vauxhall has revealed the small family car has helped to secure future production of Vauxhall models at the Cheshire plant. Currently the plant is capable of producing 500 cars a day in order to supply the UK, which makes up 25 per cent of Astra sales across Europe.
Originally introduced in 1979 as the Vauxhall Astra Mk 1, the Astra has been updated five times since its inception. During that time it spawned the GTE, GSI and VXR cars, which provided the basis for various motorsports models.
With Vauxhall reporting strong sales figures for the latest version of the Astra, it looks set to be around for many more years to come.
