Ford Fiesta tops 2011 sales charts
The Ford Fiesta is currently the best selling car in Britain for 2011 according to statistics from the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The supermini model recorded the most sales in March, with a total of 19,676 of units sold. In the year to date, a total of 27,294 Ford Fiesta have been sold in the UK market, more than any other current model.
Ford’s larger hatchback, the Focus, is currently the second best seller of the year to date with 24,435 units sold. In March alone the Ford Focus was also the second best selling model with 14,370 sales. So far in the year to date, Ford has sold a total of 80,028 cars in the UK.
The current generation Ford Fiesta has received praise and numerous awards since its launch in 2008.
The Fiesta was crowned Auto Express Car of the Year for 2009. For the same year, the model was awarded What Car? Car of the year, the car magazine also chose the Fiesta in the Best Supermini category.
Despite the success of the Fiesta, supermini volumes actually fell overall during March, even though their market share edged up to 38.4%. Nevertheless, one in five cars sold in the month were in the small car segment.
Meanwhile lower medium cars saw a rapid drop in demand, possibly linked to changeover to new models, whilst demand for luxury saloon, MPVs and executive cars increased.
