Ford Fiesta is most popular car in the UK
The Ford Fiesta is still the most popular car in the UK after topping the sales charts once again in August.
Over 61,000 Ford Fiestas have now been sold in the UK in 2011, making it the most popular car ahead of the larger Ford Focus and its biggest rival, the Vauxhall Corsa.
The Ford Fiesta was able to take advantage of a surge in interest in small cars in August of over a third compared to previous months as car buyers seek more frugal and smaller cars to offset the rising cost of ownership.
According to the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders, who compiled the sales figures, manufacturer offers are the reason small cars are becoming popular.
Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "Consumers are nervous about the future, but with industry offering unprecedented improvements in fuel economy, competitive finance offers and a wide variety of new models, buyers will find there is something to suit every taste and pocket."
Ford has also been helped by a number of price reductions to its Fiesta range including the introduction of the new entry-level Studio specification.
The new model costs just £9,495 - £500 less than Style models - making it the most affordable Ford Fiesta on sale today.
Elsewhere in August sales, the Vauxhall Corsa was the second most popular car in the UK with 2,900 models sold during the month.
The Ford Focus was the third best-seller while its main rival, the Vauxhall Astra, finished sixth overall. Vauxhall however, will take solace in the fact it is the only car maker to have three models in the top ten best-sellers so far in 2011.
The Vauxhall Corsa and Vauxhall Astra are listed in the top five most popular cars in 2011 while the Vauxhall Insignia is the sixth biggest-selling model on 2011 with over 31,000 cars sold.
