Fiat designs electric 500 city car
Chrysler has announced plans to release an electric version of the Fiat 500 in the US by 2012, it was announced today.
As yet, Fiat has refused to comment on when, if ever, the Fiat 500EV will be available in UK showrooms, but more news is expected later in the year.
Fiat recently announced it was taking over Chrysler sales in Europe as part of an alliance between the two manufacturers, and the production of the Fiat 500EV has further strengthened the relationship.
Chrysler says it chose the Fiat 500 because the lightweight, small platform of the city car is ideal for quiet, zero-emission driving.
The Fiat 500 is one of Fiat’s best-selling cars, particularly in the European market where it is a popular small car for urban driving.
Production of the Fiat 500EV will begin in 2012 in the US.
