Car numbers breach 35 million
There are over 35 million vehicles in the UK according to the latest government figures but the number of motorcycles has declined alarmingly in recent years.
A survey of vehicles registered in the UK has revealed cars, unsurprisingly, are in the majority with four out of every five vehicles falling into the car category.
This is in comparison to motorcycles which account for 3.7 per cent of the total. According to the figures there are now just 28,800 motorcycles on the road in the UK compared to 53,000 on 2001.
Despite motorcycles being cheaper to buy, run and insure than cars seem to be declining in popularity despite fuel price increases.
Drivers are much more likely to encounter vans on the road. Nearly ten per cent of all vehicles are vans. There are currently a little over 3.5m light good vehicles on the road today and nearly half a million heavy goods vehicles.
According to MoneySupermarket, which looked at van insurance policies, the most popular van maker in the UK is Ford.
The Ford Transit has been the best-selling van in the UK for 45 years and the new version released this year is expected to continue this trend.
In total five of the top ten van derivations are Ford Transit vans with the most popular being the long wheelbase 350 TD version.
It is the same story for cars where seven of the top ten are Ford models either in the Fiesta, Focus or Ka supermini range.
The most popular car in the UK is the Ford Fiesta Zetec, a mid-range trim for the compact hatchback. The Ford Fiesta was the most popular car sold in the UK in 2012 and a new model went on sale this year.
The next two most popular cars are the Ford Focus Zetec and the Ford Focus LX. The Ford Ka and Ford Focus Ghia completed a clean sweep of the top five.
Other cars to make it into the top ten, according to MoneySupermarket, are the long-running Renault Clio, currently into its third decade on sale with a new model in 2013, the Peugeot 206 and the Volkswagen Golf GT.
The amount of cars built in the UK is on the rise with over 20 manufacturers currently building cars r vans on these shores.
Nissan is the biggest producer of cars in the UK from its Sunderland plant, which builds 500,000 cars each year including the Qashqai, Juke and the new Nissan Note.
Other car makers based in the UK include Land Rover, Jaguar, Honda, Vauxhall and a host of luxury firms such as Aston Martin and Bentley.
Cars built in the UK include the Vauxhall Astra, all Land Rover and Jaguar models and the Vauxhall Vivaro van.
There are nearly two million cars registered in the UK each year and the most popular cars include the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Vauxhall Corsa.
