A Ford engineer has this week been awarded the title of “Dynamicist of the Year" by Vehicle Dynamics International magazine.

Jurgen Putzchler, Ford supervisor of medium car vehicle dynamics, was chosen from a three-person shortlist by an international panel of judges, after his work on the new Ford Focus and C-Max.

Putszchler has worked to great lengths on the dynamics of the Focus and C-Max within Ford facilities in Germany and Belgium.

He has also conducted his work on the world famous Nurburgring circuit and more obscure roads in Wales and Essex in the UK. Putzschler has said he considers the award an honour for Ford’s global team.

Vehicle dynamics are how a vehicle behaves on the road, Putszchler and his team focus on all the different aspects that make up the dynamics, such as ride, handling and body stiffness.

The new Ford Focus launched in the UK market earlier this year. Every model now comes with USB connectivity, voice-activated Bluetooth, DAB digital radio and a Torque Vectoring Control system that optimises engine torque distribution.

Available for new Focus is a new 1.6 TDCi diesel engine delivering a fuel economy of over 67mpg on the combined cycle. Powertrains using Ford’s new 1.6 EcoBoost turbo petrol engine achieve a figure of more than 47mpg also on the combined cycle.

First launched in 1998, the Ford Focus has been one of the UK’s best selling cars for ten years now. Current statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the Focus is currently the best selling car of 2011 in the year to date.

The latest Ford C-Max MPV, launched in 2010, takes it design cues from the Iosis Max concept car shown at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

Like the Focus, the C-Max is available with the all new 1.6 litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine. Some useful features the MPV equips include active park assist and blind-spot detection system.

Pricing for the Ford Focus currently starts from £16,000, rising up to £21,250 for the range topping Titanium X version. The Ford C-Max meanwhile is currently available from an estimated on the road price of £17,205.
